Youth volunteers and residents Eshraga Abdon and Maryam Mahmood ""organized a mental health program for school-aged residents at Island Walk! Over a four week period from July to August, 120 students across six properties in Reston (Island Walk, Cameron Crescent, Cedar Ridge, West Glade and Stone Gate) and one property in the City of Fairfax (West Wood Oaks) were educated on how to combat stigma, increase suicide awareness and promote help seeking behavior.

Before the program began, the youth instructors created goodie bags for each registered child and had them hand delivered to each registered resident; bags included important information as well as incentives for participation. The first week was a mental health/ mental illnesses overview where appropriate resources were distributed. For the second week of the project, the pair taught stress management skills and incorporated boosting one’s resilience, especially during the COVID pandemic. Participants were assigned a crossword puzzle based on vocabulary as each week’s activity because of studies correlating word puzzles to the alleviation of psychological strain. If they showed proof of completion of this activity, they were entered into a raffle for an additional prize.

For the third week focused on compassion and gratitude, the youth were taught acts of kindness and were encouraged to have a positive impact on those around them. For the fourth and final week, Maryam and Eshraga emphasized the importance of physical health. The students received a fun outdoor bingo sheet to fill out to encourage movement. The delivered baggies contained a jump rope and an information sheet on the benefits of physical health.

""At the end of the program, Maryam and Eshraga celebrated the accomplishments of the youth with a celebration. Youth and family from three properties attended an in-person event to acknowledge the end of a successful program. The program volunteers were provided a separate celebration and gifted personalized thank you letters.
