programs, presentations, and engagement activities at Enterprise communities. Park View at Ellicott City II resident Barbara Jones happily assists with planning and executing events to support and uplift her fellow neighbors.
Since moving into the community in September 2021, a year before the building’s renovation, Jones has consistently gone above and beyond to support her neighbors. It has truly been a pleasure to have her as a resident volunteer, as she has been praised by Resident Services Manager Kellie Thomas.
“As a resident volunteer, Mrs. Barbara takes it upon herself to wipe down and disinfect the tables in the community room each morning before activities begin,” said Thomas. “She also oversees the bimonthly coffee hour, often donating items from her own kitchen to accommodate an overflow of residents.”
A key focus area for Resident Services is ensuring residents are food secured or addressing food insecurity across the portfolio. Jones pursues programs and opportunities that directly align with initiative. She has coordinated with her church, Mount Gregory Methodist, to provide fresh produce to the residents of Park View at Ellicott City I and II every second Monday of the month. Jones also ensures that goods from the church’s food bank are always easily accessible for her neighbors, as she brings additional food to the community to share.
Acts of volunteerism establish powerful connections amongst neighbors, thus strengthening long-lasting bonds. Beyond food assistance, Jones fosters a strong sense of community and care. Residents consistently rave about the monthly potluck dinners she organizes. If a resident is unwell or hospitalized, she promptly informs the community’s site associates and ensures they receive a card or small gift to lift their spirits.
Jones' volunteer efforts do not stop there. Currently, she is taking the Chromebook classes offered at Ellicott City II a second time so she can assist less tech-savvy residents. Deciding to acquire new technological skills is no small feat and for Jones to enroll in the classes a second time displays her desire to encourage her neighbors to learn the basics and a variety of computer programs.
“If you were to look up the definition of an exemplary resident volunteer, you would surely find Mrs. Barbara’s picture,” expressed Thomas. “We are incredibly grateful for her kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our community.”
We would like to extend a special thank you to Jones for her gracious heart and the time spent improving the lives of the residents at her community. Her thoughtful spirit is truly admirable, as she encourages all residents to actively participate in volunteer initiatives and to always feel empowered to lend fellow neighbors a helping hand.

At Stony Brook, residents aren’t just neighbors—they’re a community. Stony Brook Youth Volunteers, in collaboration with the Healthy Community Action Team (HCAT), took an inspiring step toward a healthier future by rebuilding their beloved community garden.
This initiative, supported by HCAT, provided five brand-new garden beds, replacing damaged ones after a tree fell last year. With each bed valued at approximately $500, this project is a testament to the power of partnerships and the dedication of local youth.
Over two weeks, more than 15 middle and high school student volunteers dedicated 10 hours of their time after school to assembling the garden beds inside the community center. Working in small teams, they gained hands-on experience using tools, problem-solving, and collaborating to bring the garden back to life.
This effort aligns with Enterprise’s Health & Wellness impact area, which focuses on encouraging residents to make informed food choices. With the new garden beds in place, HCAT will host gardening and healthy meal preparation workshops throughout 2025, teaching residents how to grow and cook nutritious food.
But this project is about more than just growing fresh produce—it’s about growing connections, confidence, and community pride. The Stony Brook Volunteers have shown what’s possible when people come together to make a difference.
A special thank you to HCAT, the Stony Brook Youth Volunteers, the Resident Services team and all involved team members for their hard work and dedication. We can’t wait to see what’s next as the garden continues to flourish!

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, 10 volunteers from the United Way of Central Maryland and Neighbors United gathered at Fall River Terrace in Columbia, Md., for a day of landscaping, seasonal planting and neighborhood beautification. Volunteers were met with support and warm appreciation from residents.
The Neighbors United initiative is led by Andy Masters, who brings valuable experience from a brief tenure with ECP. The Neighbors United initiative is currently focused on rejuvenating communities in Columbia, Mondawmin and Aberdeen. The initiative is in year one of a three-year community organizing effort. “We are looking forward to more engagement and impactful work together in Columbia as well as at Metro Heights and Highland Commons,” said Dan Atzmon, senior manager for resident experience.

from one of the community's mothers who advocated for the event on behalf of her son. Island Walk’s Social Work intern from George Mason University, Amy Burkhart, excitedly joined the efforts along with one of the ECD’s Youth Specialists, Eman Kurtu, who works in the on-site grant-funded after-school program.
The three leaders met bi-weekly and planned out how the event would best serve the needs of the youth and their families. The team decided it would be best to have stations with different activities or crafts for the children that were specifically designed with their needs in mind. The various stations included playing with kinetic sand, making a rainbow with colorful construction paper, making sensory balloons, and assembled a small box to take home all their crafts.
About 15 residents and staff attended the event and the space was designed to ensure the youth felt safe and limited the possibility of sensory overload. The parents and siblings of the kids were strongly encouraged to participate to engage with each other and build a stronger sense of community. The kids loved each station, especially the kinetic sand.
"Overall, it was a great success and the families are already requesting future events!" exclaimed Community Network Manager Sharon Blacketor.

organized a mental health program for school-aged residents at Island Walk! Over a four week period from July to August, 120 students across six properties in Reston (Island Walk, Cameron Crescent, Cedar Ridge, West Glade and Stone Gate) and one property in the City of Fairfax (West Wood Oaks) were educated on how to combat stigma, increase suicide awareness and promote help seeking behavior.
Before the program began, the youth instructors created goodie bags for each registered child and had them hand delivered to each registered resident; bags included important information as well as incentives for participation. The first week was a mental health/ mental illnesses overview where appropriate resources were distributed. For the second week of the project, the pair taught stress management skills and incorporated boosting one’s resilience, especially during the COVID pandemic. Participants were assigned a crossword puzzle based on vocabulary as each week’s activity because of studies correlating word puzzles to the alleviation of psychological strain. If they showed proof of completion of this activity, they were entered into a raffle for an additional prize.
For the third week focused on compassion and gratitude, the youth were taught acts of kindness and were encouraged to have a positive impact on those around them. For the fourth and final week, Maryam and Eshraga emphasized the importance of physical health. The students received a fun outdoor bingo sheet to fill out to encourage movement. The delivered baggies contained a jump rope and an information sheet on the benefits of physical health.
At the end of the program, Maryam and Eshraga celebrated the accomplishments of the youth with a celebration. Youth and family from three properties attended an in-person event to acknowledge the end of a successful program. The program volunteers were provided a separate celebration and gifted personalized thank you letters.

and learned health tips from a variety of local organizations. They received information about proper blood pressure levels, slip and falls for seniors, how to appropriately take medication and HIV and other various health screenings. Resources were provided for topics ranging from mental health and grief counseling to signing up for Medicaid. Light refreshments were enjoyed and residents were given toiletries including toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, tissues and soap.
Thank you to the following organizations and groups for providing services and resources at the health fair: Giant Food Pharmacy, MISHA House, LLC, Roberta's House, Larry Simmons, Dr. Mansour and the Student Nurses, Carl McGhee, and University of Maryland Outreach.
