Stony Brook Awarded Youth Garden Grants

  |     |   Community Story, Event

Congratulations to Stony Brook Apartments!

Stony Brook was selected for the 2023 Youth Garden Grant and Crescent Garden Specialty Award this spring. Enterprise applied for this grant to provide $1,000 in gardening supplies and a $500 check to spend on repairs to the Stony Brook community garden. Move image

Stony Brook's gardening program educates students about healthy eating, community involvement, and responsibility. Once a week on Thursdays and at their own pace on weekends, about 25 of the community’s youth participate in the gardening program. They grow fruits and vegetables to help feed their community!

Stony Brook's garden includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, and wildflowers. Fruits and vegetables are distributed to residents once they are ripe.

In addition to celebrating their garden grant awards, Stony Brook's after-school program utilized its after-school grant by celebrating 100 days of school. The program is grant funded through Fairfax County's Consolidated Community Funding Pool.

As an engaging activity, students participated in an activity of stacking 100 cups. There were many creative solutions to the activity, but students stacked cups in any way they could.

Currently, there are 49 students in grades 1-12 in the community’s after-school program. They meet Monday-Thursday for two hours after school. Four local teachers also serve as after-school tutors for the program to help students with reading and math. As a result of their participation in the program, students are expected to demonstrate positive academic performance in those key subjects.

A special thank you goes out to Resident Services Manager Tyler Hinegardner at Stony Brook! Hinegardner coordinates programming and services for residents. Hinegardner also contributed to the implementation and evaluation of both the grant-funded programs described in this article.

Again, congratulations to Stony Brook!
