Allendale's Black History Month Celebration

Allendale’s Black History Month Celebration

  |     |   Community Story, Event

On Tuesday February 28, Allendale celebrated Black History Month by inviting their residents and local Enterprise Residential associates to learn about historic figures in black history, share their stories living as black residents in the community and enjoy delicious soul food. While the DJ played selections of music from black artists, residents danced and ate fried and baked chicken, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, ribs and ham.

The community room tables were decorated in black, red, yellow and green tapestries with “Black History Month” and “Juneteenth” embroidered in the center and guests played trivia and answered questions about black actors, actress, activists, athletes and performers. Posters of famous figures in black history lined the room and residents were eager to read information and look at photos.

Allendale residents Inez Jackson and Doretha Hunter spoke about their time at the community and how through the changes that the community has experienced, each resident should love and respect one another to create a safe and enjoyable environment. Maintenance Supervisor Heddie Blaine talked in depth about the figures on the posters and why she believed that black history should be discussed often amongst all of different backgrounds.
